FUEL SELECTION

Diesel or natural gas? Start with the site.

Choose generator fuel against the approved project requirements and the supply available at the site. Diesel requires a fuel-storage and replenishment plan. Natural gas requires confirmed supply pressure and flow. Neither fuel is automatically the right choice for every commercial application.

An existing gas line is not a capacity confirmation

Cummins identifies adequate fuel pressure and flow—including during load changes—as important to gaseous generator operation. Ask the responsible fuel-system professional to verify supply against the selected model’s requirements. The presence of a gas meter is not enough.

For either fuel, put the responsibility for supply verification in the project scope. If fuel information is still unknown, say so in the request and keep it open until confirmed.

Compare the rating for the duty you intend

Standby, prime, and continuous ratings describe different operating conditions. Caterpillar’s rating guidance shows why a single headline kW figure is not a complete description of permitted use. Confirm the exact manufacturer rating and operating limits for the proposed model.

Ask the project designer to review any proposed substitution. Compare the selected unit with the approved requirements before negotiating a purchase around a different fuel or rating.

A practical way to narrow the choice

Dixiana Power accepts diesel and natural gas sourcing requests. Send the specification and site details; any particular unit, price, and availability are confirmed separately.

  • Write down whether the project specification permits both fuels.
  • Identify which fuel-supply details have been verified and which are still open.
  • Request the proposed model and its documentation for each option.
  • Compare the complete equipment and site-work scope.
  • Resolve design approvals before placing an equipment order.

Common questions

Can a natural gas generator replace a specified diesel generator?

A fuel change requires a project review. The proposed unit must satisfy the required electrical performance, operating duty, fuel supply, and site conditions, with any required approvals confirmed.

Which fuel produces the lower total project cost?

Compare written proposals for the actual site and equipment. Include the fuel-related work and all installation and transport responsibilities; the generator price alone does not establish the total.
